Photography Judging Critera

Each judge will pick their top three photos from the pool based roughly on the following guidelines. They will then take those three images and assign point values in each of the three categories, adding them up for a point total for each of the three images.

Point totals from all images receiving points will then be added, with the image receiving the highest point total winning the contest.

In the event of a tie, the judges will discuss and vote on the images in question in order to determine a winner.

Technical – maximum of 10 points
Use the following as guidelines to judge the technical aspect of the image:

  • Focus
  • Exposure
  • Depth of Field
  • Noise
  • Tonal Range

    Creative – maximum of 10 points
    Use the following as guidelines to judge the creative worth of the image:
  • Composition
  • Movement (through the image)
  • Originality
  • Story/Impact
  • Lighting
  • Good use of basic principles (texture, repetition, leading lines, patterns, rule of thirds, negative space, isolation, color, tone, contrast, lighting, etc., etc.)

    Thematic – maximum of 5 points
  • Does it follow the theme for the month?

    Total of 25 maximum points per judge per image.
