Help-Portrait is a movement among photographers doing portraits of people that aren't able to afford traditional avenues of family portraiture.

If you don't know about Help Portrait here's a new video

If you plan to participate, please join the Charlotte page of Help Portrait so I can keep information in one place. Help Portrait

  • The main Charlotte group will be setting up at 9am and shooting from 10-4 at the McColl Center for Visual Arts.
  • I need a team of about 4-5 with lights & a backdrop to work from 9-1 at the Salvation Army Hope House, women's transitional housing.
  • We will be working with the Battered Women's Shelter, Wish Foundation (housing for the homeless initiative), and Catholic Social Services. We will also try to photograph the Salvation Army bell ringers because for some of them it's an honor to be chosen and they'd like to have photos to send to their families. Others are community volunteers and the Salvation Army would like photos of them.
  • Still working out printing details. Need help.
  • There are two other Help-Portrait groups shooting that day. George Holt has a group shooting at a senior center. Greg Mills is shooting in Concord at the Baptist Sharing House. You may pick whichever of the three groups works best for you.
  • I have about $250 in donations lined up for printing and expenses as well as volunteer helpers.
  • I've contacted friends at the Aveda institute to see about hair and makeup people.
  • I need shooters to confirm their availability and in which location they want to work. I don't want to snare any of George or Greg's people or vice versa.
  • I need a list of what equipment we have at the McColl location.
  • I could use at least one more post production person. I'd like to either upload from the venue or find a nearby hot spot and upload from there to minimize turnaround time.
  • You don't have to be an expert shooter to participate. Just join in. We'll find a place for you!
  • If you haven't given me your email & phone please do so.

I will continue to furnish details as they become available.

This is a pretty big project, going beyond the basic photo shoot. If anybody has any thoughts or ideas, please pass them along.

I learned a lot, including the fact that we haven't even begun to mine the talents hidden in this group. You guys were wonderful!

I contacted someone I know at the McColl Center for Visual Art. They are willing to let us use their available studio space between 11 am and 4 pm on December 12th.

Thought this was a wonderful experience, for us Photog's, as well as for the refugees. This is an event we should participate in annually.

What an "Soul" rewarding opportunity to serve a group of people that are likely not given as much attention as was provided yesterday! The environment was filled with warm-hearted volunteers that were there to genuinely help those that came to get their portraits AS WELL as help the less experienced photographers learn more about their trade. WELL DONE GUYS!

There were not as many participants as were expected, but it was a great opportunity to shoot. A lot of things about workflow and lighting set-up were learned.

I had a wonderful time today. I hope that all the familes or individuals who had their portraits taken where happy with them. It was a great all around event. Thanks so much to Sharon for working so hard to make this all come together. Cindy Cooley
