Gang, not a photography question but highly related. When I process photos that I want to do some editing to in CS4, they get converted into TIF files and are much larger in file size. As an example, I just did one and the file size of the copy was 60MB vs. the JPG file size of about 5MB. Is this conversion to TIF and related file size necessary? Anyone have any advice on this?
Thanks! Ted |

One way to save on the size of a TIF is change the preference of Lightroom for 8 bit insted of 16 bit. You should have done all the exposure changes before you go to CS4 so 8 bit will be just fine. Also check to see if you have compression turned on for TIF.

If you are shooting RAW, yes, the conversion is necessary. Any image going to photoshop from RAW format has to be rendered as a TIFF or PSD depending on which you choose in your settings. This lives along side the original RAW file in your LR library. In my opinion and my flow I don't worry about it any more. I choose 16 bit so I have all the data I need and go with the thought process that hard drives are dirt cheap now days. I can always add more when the time comes.

Not shooting in RAW but point taken on space. Already set to 8 bit, TIF format, 240 resolution and LZW compression and still the huge file size. I won't worry about it but if you have any other input, please let me know - thanks!

I'm not sure if this will answer your question or not but you can change your preference in LightRoom to open the files as PSD versus TIFF.
Go into LR select Edit from the menu bar, select preferences, click on the external editing tab at the top of the window you will see the option to change the file format from TIFF or PSD, select ok when done. Now when you export to CS4 it should open the raw files as PSD in CS4 instead of TIFF. |
